One of the things on my 2015 Bucket List, was to go on more weekend adventures and in an effort to try and make that happen, last weekend Will and I went on another little overnight break, this time of the slightly more chilled out variety! We headed down (or up, should I say!) to Thornton Hall Hotel* which is found in the Wirral just outside of Liverpool to enjoy one of their ‘A Little Luxury’ packages and we literally couldn’t wait to just kick back, relax and get a little bit pampered!
Included in the package is bed and breakfast in a club room, access to the spa for the duration of your stay, a 25 minute treatment each and dinner in the 3 AA Rosette The Lawns Restaurant. Normal check in time is 2pm, but one quick and easy phone call to the hotel and they allocated us a room where there was nobody staying the night before – meaning we could check in from 10am, which was perfect as we got to enjoy pretty much a full day in the spa. Our room was really clean with a super size bed and a smart TV which came with Netflix built in! (the dream, right?!). As for the spa itself, it isn’t the biggest in the world and it doesn’t have a massive range of facilities, however the facilities it does have make it worth the trip. The pool is spacious and so didn’t get crowded the whole weekend we were there and the Caribbean rain setting in the experience shower is the perfect way to cool down after a session in the sauna and the steam room. There is also a cute little Brasserie where you can grab lunch and sit outside in your robe looking over the grounds – I had the most delicious goats cheese and roasted tomato jacket potato with a great big helping of eton mess. Perhaps my favourite feature though is the two outdoor hot tubs that overlook the beautiful english countryside, I think we genuinely could have stayed there all day! With the added addition of on outside phone where you can ring for drinks to be brought out to you without having to move from the bubbles – you definitely feel like you are getting the celebrity treatment (until you spill your Prosecco all over the floor trying to take a hot tub selfie – I know, so not smooth!)
As well as our time in the spa, we were treated to a 3 course dinner at The Lawns Restaurant. The Lawns has recently become home to exec chef Matt Worswick, who will be appearing on Great British Menu and they pride themselves on offering fine dining for people of all ages. The decor is super grand with a big chandelier hanging from the middle of the ceiling and the service is slick and attentive without being too much. As for the food, as two people who often side step super fancy restaurants for street food markets, we actually really enjoyed it! My favourite part was a trio of bread rolls that were brought out with homemade salted butter – they literally melted in your mouth. The one thing I would say is that for me, the atmosphere was maybe a little bit too formal – I sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable when things are too super fancy and I would have liked the staff and the set up to just be a little bit more relaxed to fit in with how chilled I felt after the spa.
With prices starting at £125 per person for the A Little Luxury break, Thornton Hall is a really nice place to get away from it all for a night. There is plenty to do if you don’t want to move from the hotel (which is what we did!), but if you fancy exploring there is loads to keep you busy too – designer outlet Cheshire Oaks is ten minutes drive away. If you are looking for somewhere to escape the daily grind, chill out and watch Netflix in a giant fluffy robe, then get booking!
*We were given a complimentary stay for review purposes, however all opinions and hot tub lovings are my own.
