I LOVE award season, and my favourite part is, without a doubt, scrolling through the wealth of jaw droppingly beautiful dresses on show the next morning. The Oscars is the cream of the crop for red carpet fashion, where everyone pulls out all the stops, so after a considerable amount of time spent drooling over this year’s looks I have managed to narrow it down to my favourite three…
Lupita NYong’o in Prada
I am such a sucker for a Grecian get up, so Lupita’s beautiful pale blue Prada gown was always going to secure a place in my favourites. The colour looks so striking against her skin tone and she completes her ethereal look perfectly with simple gold jewellery on her wrist and hands, leaving the plunging neckline to speak for itself. Lupita seems to have made very poignant choices with her look as she said the colour “reminded her of home”, referring to her home country of Nairobi, and the smallest gold ring was a frog, her family’s lucky totem. This is a beautiful example of someone flying the flag for their culture and doing it in some serious style.
Angelina Jolie in Ellie Saab
I’m not always a massive fan of Angelina’s style choices but her decision to sport this beautiful Great Gatsbyesque Ellie Saab is one I definitely approve of. The long sleeves and deep, v-neck back work together to give her that sought after Angelina style of sultry but elegant. Similar to Lupita, the gown is understatedly beautiful, needing only very simple accessories, and since Angelina has the accessory of Brad Pitt on her arm who could blame her for not wanting anything else?
Kate Hudson in Versace
Kate Hudson’s slinky Versace number adds a touch of Hollywood Glamour to my selection. The Satin finish fits her figure like a dream and the plunging neckline teamed with the structured shoulders gives it a sexy but sophisticated feel. The addition of the scooping, cowl neck back gave also gives it a unique twist and a more ‘awards evening’ feel. She completes her retro, red carpet look with smokey eyes and big barrel curls that I can only dream of (and believe me I do!).
What were your favourite looks from the red carpet this year? It seems I have a thing for backless dresses…
