The Lifestyle Post #27: Keeping fit in Winter

It’s freezing and it’s starting to get dark before 4pm, so of course that is the perfect time for me to decide that I want to start getting fit. Staying motivated to exercise in the winter isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but I think the key is to find ways to exercise that you genuinely enjoy so the thought of taking off your huge dressing gown and getting off your butt doesn’t seem quite so horrific.

Despite the time of year, I have found a few ways to excercise, without having to brave the arctic cold to go for a run in my thermals and by some Christmas miracle, I seem to have got into a bit of a routine that I am keeping up, so here we go…

1) Swap Netflix for excercise DVDs

One great way of getting motivation to workout is knowing that a warm shower and your bed is right there and waiting for you as soon as you finish. Using excercise DVDs or YouTube videos are a great way to exercise from the comfort of your own home. One of my favourites at the moment is the AM/PM Yoga DVD with Roxy Shahidi. The DVD comes with two 45 minute routines, one to give you an energy boost in the morning and one relaxation based routine to chill you out and unwind before bed, making it super easy to fit into your day. Although it is aimed at beginners, there are different levels for a lot of the exercises so it is still challenging even as you become a more seasoned yoga pro. If you are going to be doing yoga regularly it is worth investing in a good mat – I use this Eco Luxury Mat from Manuka, but they also have some super cute beginner mats if you want something slightly cheaper.

2) Swap the gym for classes

Now I’m going to be completely honest and say I have never been one for the gym – even when I have had (very brief) periods of being into excercise – hitting the treadmill is just not my thing and there’s even less chance of me getting there in the winter. Instead I have swapped the treadmill for classes and there are loads to choose from whether it’s high intensity cardio or weights and toning you want to do. I recently found a super good membership deal at a Sports Direct Fitness only five minutes from where I work which includes gym use, classes and use of the pool and spa facilities for only £25 a month! They have a whole range of classes on every evening – meaning I can always find something to do when I am free.

3) Swap the snooze button for a morning swim

The last thing I have found works for me is to try and go for a morning swim before work a couple of times a week. Although getting up at 6.30am to go swimming might not seem like the most fun, it’s super refreshing and is a nice wake up for the day. The fact you are getting straight in a pool also means you can throw on baggy clothes and head straight there, without having to think about brushing your hair or making yourself look presentable. If your gym has a steam room and sauna you could also build in enough time for a quick ten minutes to reward yourself after your lengths – meaning your skin gets a quick detox too!

These are just a few things that have worked for me and that’s not to say that they would work for everyone but if it means I can eat a few more guilt free chocolate yule logs in the next few weeks then I would say I’m onto a winner!
