Over a year and a half ago (has it really
been that long?!), I went on my first big adventure to Thailand and one of the
things I really enjoyed was trying out a whole load of new food and flavours in
traditional Thai style. When I came back, I really struggled to find a
restaurant in the UK that offered authentic tasting Thai food, that was until I
paid a visit to Giggling Squid in Brighton (read more about that here!). So
when I was offered the chance to review a new branch recently opened in
Stratford, I jumped at the chance, and here’s what I thought…
The new branch, which can be found right in
the heart of Stratford, is decorated with earthy tones and rustic wood, which
gives a laid back, chilled out vibe that is obviously influenced by the far
east. There is a really nice mixture of sophistication without it feeling
overly formal, which is my favourite kind of place.
To start we opted for the sharing platter,
which was made up of hand cut pork
strips grilled on skewers, salt and pepper squid, Thai fish cakes and prawn
crackers. After falling in love with the one in Brighton, I had high hopes and
I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The squid in particular was really tasty, with
a salty kick and a soft juicy texture, which wasn’t rubbery at all.
Now it was time for
mains, my friend Caroline went for the King Scallops and I opted for the Red
Duck Curry with a healthy portion of coconut rice (my absolute fav!). One of my favourite things about this place is the presentation and
both mains looked amazing, and tasted just as good. Giggling Squid are known
for their coastal specialities and Caroline said the scallops were some of the
best she had ever tasted.
For dessert we
finished off with some of the homemade sorbet and ice cream. The black sesame ice cream wasn’t quite my cup of tea but the sorbet was light and really refreshing – the
perfect way to top of the meal.
I had big expectations
and once again Giggling Squid didn’t disappoint – they also do a Thai tapas
menu for lunch, which is definitely on my list to try! For any Thai food fan,
you will be hard pressed to beat this place!
