Many moons ago, in this post, I told you all about a new thing Will and I were trying out called Alphabet dating, where we take it in turns to plan dates and work our way through the letters of the alphabet. After a busy few months filled with new jobs, holidays, birthdays and anniversaries we finally got round to the letter B when we were invited down to try out new deluxe burger and shrimp restaurant Bun & Bowl at the Cube, Birmingham.
From the moment we walked into Bun & Bowl we both really loved the atmosphere. It had a really cool laid back bluesy vibe and the staff were instantly friendly and welcoming. After being shown to the best seat in the house, manager Jai popped over to introduce himself and tell us a bit more about the menu.
The general concept is simple – you can either choose from their selection of delicious gourmet burgers or you can tuck into a giant bowl of authentic flavoursome shrimp. They also have a yummy selection of starters and sides to top off your meal, alongside a very inviting looking cocktail menu.
Of course this was the perfect place to start and I opted for the Speak Easy cocktail, which was made from Gin, Kiwi schnapps and Elderflower cordial, while Will went for a classic corona. Jai explained that the whole team at Bun & Bowl are really passionate about cocktail making and they all have their own specialities and techniques. I am such a big cocktail lover and it was really interesting to hear about how Jai along with some other local guys are trying to bring back the cocktail culture in Birmingham with bars such as Island Bar, pubs like The Victoria and new venues opening up in The Cube all serving some of the most delicious cocktails in the city! (An after work cocktail bar crawl sounds like a great contender for C!)
Now it was time to get started on the grub! To start will and I decided to share some of the signature garlic bread and Hummus with warm pitta. The hummus was insanely delicious and slightly warmed – my favourite way to eat it!
For the main event, Will went for the Iberian Burger which was topped with Chorizo and red pepper dressing. Me being typically indecisive, decided to go for the option of three mini burgers, choosing the Iberian, the Inferno, which was topped with chilli salsa and caramelised onions and the classic. I think the idea of a mini burger trio is genius, especially when you have so many delicious varieties to choose from! My favourite was the Iberian, purely because I have a deep love for Chorizo, but all three were really tender, juicy and packed full of flavour. Jai also brought over a jug of his speciality homemade lemonade, crafted from his mum’s own recipe, to wash it all down with!
For sides I chose the spicy wedges and Will went for the sweet potato fries and of course we had to try some of the shrimp! We chose the Mediterranean style shrimps cooked in tomato, garlic and black olives and although Will wasn’t too keen (he isn’t a big shrimp lover!), I loved them. Unbeknownst to me Shrimp is actually shellfish, which I thought I was allergic too. However after tucking into a big bowl and not feeling any kind of funny side effects, I think my allergy may be cured!
To finish off, even though we were literally stuffed, we decided to try one of their Brownies (dedication to the B theme right there!) and as brownies go it was pretty darn good. Finished with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some fresh berries it was just the right amount of sweet without being too sickly. Kim, our waiter for the night, also insisted that we try one of his favourite Lemon Cheesecake desert cocktails and even though I was convinced I could not fit another thing in my belly, I am so glad we did because it was beautiful! Made from Pinot Grigio, Limoncello and gingerbread it was a crazy mix of flavours and tasted just like Christmas! (Only 12 Friday’s to go you know!)
Both Will and I really loved Bun & Bowl, not only for the quirky concept and the mouth wateringly delicious food but for the funky relaxed atmosphere the whole team have worked to create. Chatting to Jai and Kim about their menu and how they want to develop it (look out for a takeaway menu coming soon!) was a really nice touch to the evening and showed again how passionate the guys down at Bun & Bowl are about their little baby.
We will definitely heading back soon whether it’s just for a few after work cocktails or to have another taste of that dreamy hummus!
